Anand escapes with a draw

Kasparov, meanwhile, pulverised Tiviakov, who was far too passive all through the game. Playing white against Kasparov, he deviated from the main lines of the Sicilian, but failed to surprise the ex-champion who came up with a shrewd maneuver 9...Na5! and traded off White’s dangerous bishop and got the advantage of the two bishops. Kasparov systematically improved his position and launched a dangerous attack on the kingside. Kasparov finished off his opponent in his usual powerful manner.

His play was rather unsuccessful nearing the middle game (probably, instead of 23...Nd7 he should have played 23...b6) and later on he found himself in a complicated ending with a bad knight vs a strong bishop. Fate, however, has traditionally been favorable to him.

Kramnik played out a dull draw in 15 moves against Dutch grandmaster Jan Timman.

Adams could have created more serious problems to his age-old nemesis by means of 29.Rc5 Ra8 30.Bd3 Nb7 31.Be4 Nxc5 32.Bxa8 with good chances for a victory. But we saw an ending with an extra bishop for White where the number of the pawns was insufficient to bring Adams a full point.
