Konguvel surprised by Kalyan Kumar

International Master P Konguvel of ONGC suffered a shock defeat against Y Kalyan Kumar of Andhra Pradesh in the fourth round of the fifth Global Trust Bank International Rating Chess tournament in Hyderabad on Friday.

Five players -- top seeded Grandmaster-norm holder G B Prakash of Indian Bank, IM Ravi Gopal Hegde of Union Bank, Suvrajit Saha of Railways, Saptarshi Roy Chowdhury of Bengal and N Sanjay of Karnataka share the lead with a perfect score of four points each.

Most of the players are yet to feel at home with the new time control rule that has made the game a lot faster.

Konguvel certainly misplayed an advantageous position under time pressure. Having drawn on Thursday, the Madras-based IM went for an all out attack against Kalyan Kumar's Alekhine defence and gained vital space advantage on both flanks.

Kalyan Kumar made a positional mistake that allowed Konguvel to seize the initiative with his queenside pawn roller. With the clock ticking away in the later stages of the middlegame, Konguvel fumbled and left his two pieces en prise and he had to part with one to stay in the game.

Kalyan Kumar handled the technical part in masterly fashion thereon and added a point to his kitty after 69 moves.

Prakash played gave a excellent display of counter attack in his victory over for national under-25 champion Nassir Wajih of Railways.
