Arup Basak banned for a year

Former national table tennis champion Arup Basak has been slapped a one-year ban for his alleged misbehaviour with a foreign coach.

The executive committee of the Table Tennis Federation of India, which met in Delhi on Tuesday, found Basak's behaviour "not conforming to the dignity of the guest, a North Korean coach of international repute", a TTFI statement said.

Basak had reportedly instigated some junior players to revolt against the coach last month at a coaching camp in Calcutta in preparation for the junior nationals and led them to walk out of the camp.

The junior players were, however, exonerated by the committee after they tendered an "unconditional apology".

The committee sacked coach Pushi Lal, who was also found to have instigated the players.

On the issue of overage players participating in the junior and sub-junior tournaments, the committee decided that all complaints should be filed during the managers' meeting ahead of the tournament.

Players found guilty would be disqualified from playing in their respective age groups, and action would be taken against associations sending over-age players, the statement said.

However, final guidelines in this regard would be released after the TTFI Annual General Meeting next month.
