Sania Mirza upset

The spate of upsets continued for the third day in the Asian junior tennis championships as unheralded Chin Wei Chan of Chinese Thaipei knocked out top seed Sania Mirza at the DLTA deco-turfs in Delhi on Wednesday.

In the boys section top billed players led by top seed Sunil Kumar Sipaeya sailed comfortably into the quarter-finals.

On a damp day, Mirza failed to use her big serve effectively as she went down meekly 3-6, 3-6 to the little-known Chan.

The Chinese girl used her solid baseline game to great effect to rattle an unusually erratic Mirza who was broken twice in the first set which she lost 6-3.

Riding on the momentum, Chan easily broke her opponent twice to pocket the second set (6-3) and match to move to quarter-finals.

Unseeded Indian Samrita Sekar avenged Mirza'a shocking defeat as she upset her fancied opponent Chia-Jung Chung of Chinese Taipei 6-3, 7-5.

In yet another upset, unseeded Indian Isha Lakhani defeated seventh seed Ting Wen Wang 6-0, 5-7, 6-3.

Fifth seed Megha Vakharia stood tall among the ruins as she brushed aside Ttze-Ling Kuo of Chinese Taipei 6-3 6-2.

Second seed Da Jung Hong of Korea, fourth seed Pichaya Laosirichan of Thailand, sixth seed Diana Julianto of Indonesia and Sana Bhambri also advanced to the last eight with easy victories.
