Tushar Liberhan shines

India's Tushar Liberhan moved into the second round of the Asian junior tennis championships at the DLTA Complex in Delhi on Tuesday.

Liberhan, who had come through to the main draw via the qualifiers, defeated R Arun Prakash 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 in a first round match.

It was an hard-fought win for the 15-year-old, 875th ranked Tushar, who with his more accurate strokeplay and passing shots, came out victorious.

He now will face Yu-Da Sheih of Chinese Taipei, who had upset third seeded Rohan Gajjar in three sets on Monday.

In other results of the day, seventh seeded Jaco T. Mathew went down to Adam Jaya of Malaysia 6-4, 6-3; Rishi Behl defeated Dannio Yahya of Malaysia in straight sets, to set up a pre-quarterfinal against the second seeded Amanjot Singh.

In the girls' section, Megha Vakharia defeated Nivedita Venkatesh 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 6-2.

In the boys' doubles section, Somdev Dev Varman and Jaco T. Mathew defeated another Indian pair of Saurabh Kohli and Punna Vikas 6-1, 6-3. But the other Indian pairs in action crashed out of the event as Tejeshwar Chigateri and Chatwinder Singh were beaten by Ivan Kokurin of Uzbekistan and Ivan Kovalev of Kazakistan 4-6, 6-7 (8-6) while Nishank Mishra and Chandrasekhar Mohanty lost to Tai Wei Liu and Cheuh-Cheng Shih of Taiwan 1-6, 1-6.

In the girls' doubles section, fourth seeded Sanaa Bhambri and Sania Mirza defeated another Indian pair of Swetha Devraj and Varsha Shivshankar 6-2, 6-3.

In the other results, Lata Assudani and Medini Sharma beat Sasha Abraham and Preeti Rao 6-0, 5-7, 7-6 (7-5); Sharanya Pattabi and Nivedita Venkatesh defeated Jharna Nansi and Nidhi Shah 6-2, 6-4; Isha Lakhani and Megha Vakharia defeated Chun-Ning Tseng and Ting-Wen Wang of Taiwan 6-2, 6-3; Priyanka Parekh and Ragini Vimal beat Parul Goswami and Iciri Rai 6-3, 6-4. Ankita Bhambri and Samrita Sekar lost to the top seeds Chin-Wei Chan and Chia-Jung Chung of Taiwan 1-6, 0-6.
