Rohan Gajjar upset in Asian junior tennis

Third seed Rohan Gajjar was upset by Yu-Da Shieh of Taipei in the opening round of the Asian junior tennis championships at the DLTA Complex in Delhi on Monday.

All the other seeded players in action sailed into the second round.

Top seed Sunil Kumar Sipaeya beat compatriot Nipun Gupta in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Second seed Amanjot Singh also advanced in similiar fashion defeating Tegeshwar Chigateri 6-1, 6-2.

Gajjar, ranked 125 on the ITF junior circuit, won the first set easily at 6-2 but Shieh rallied back to take the match winning the next two sets, 6-4, 6-3.

In other first round action, fifth seed Tai Wei Liu of Taipei quelled a spirited challenge by Saurabh Singh to win 6-2, 7-5. Sixth seeded Anuwat Daloom of Thailand beat Nihal Advani 6-4, 6-1 and eighth seeded Nishank Mishra moved past Chueh-Chang of Taipei with a 6-1, 6-2 win.

Sunil Kumar will face wildcard entrant Divij Sharan in the next round. Sharan downed Natapong Pongkunsub of Thailand in a first round match.

In the girls' singles, top seed Sania Mirza trounced Nidhi Shah 6-0, 6-1 and fourth seed Thailand's L Pichaya beat Preeti Shravan 6-3, 6-1.

Isha Lakhani, Sanaa Bhambri, Samrita Sekar and Lata Asudani were the other Indians to reach the second round.

Eighth seeded Sasha Abraham fell to qualifier Eun-Hee Sung of Korea in straight sets. Chin Wei Chan of Chinese Taipei powered past Ankita Bhambri to set up a second round clash with the top seed Sania Mirza.
