Bhupathi-Lareau go down in final

Shailesh Soni

Mahesh Bhupathi and Sebastien Lareau of Canada went down in the final of the $800,000 RCA championships at Indianapolis on Sunday.

The duo, seeded eight in the tournament, lost a hard fought match to fifth seed Mark Knowles of Bahama and Brian MacPhie of the United States 6-7(5), 7-5, 4-6.

Mahesh and Lareau, who were playing together for the first time, lost the first set in a tie-breaker. The duo tried to stage a comeback by winning the second set.

In the third set, Knowles and MacPhie had a break point at 4-4 when rain held up play, but the duo returned from the delay to clinch the game and closed out the match to capture their second title together.

Mahesh picked up 175 entry points and $23,400 to share from the tournament. Incidently, Mark Knowles was Mahesh's partner last year at Indianapolis. The duo had a first round loss.

Earlier on Saturday, Mahesh and Lareau had defeated the South African pair of John-Laffnie de Jager and Robbie Koe 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(5) to enter the final.
