Dempo shock F C Kochin: Federation Cup

Former champions JCT Mills became the first team to enter the quarter-finals of the Federation Cup football tournament.

Thanks to Harvinder Singh Junior's golden goal, the Punjab outfit got ther better of Vasco, Goa, 1-0 in a second round match at the Nehru stadium in Madras on Saturday.

JCT will meet Dempo, Goa, who shocked F C Kochin 1-0 in another match.

After missing half a dozen scoring chances, Dempo managed to find the net in the 79th minute. Jose Colaco sent an uppish shot near the goalmouth. As F C Kochin goalkeeper Shibu Shanmugam and defender Vinay Kumar went for the ball, Sukdev Arawade took advantage of the mix-up between Shanmugam and Kumar and headed home.

Dempo had two easy chances earlier in the second half, but in the 63rd minute, Ramrueta made a mess when well placed and then, a few minutes later, Levy Coelho, with an open goal in front, shot wide.

JCT's golden goal came in the fifth minute of extra-time, when Jaswant Singh gave a through pass to Harvinder Singh Junior, who covered 20 yards and beat Vasco's Brazilian goalkeeper Rogerio Ramos.

The millmen should have scored on two occasions but Ramos could not be beaten. The Brazilian was par excellence in his approach and proved he was a cut above the rest. But the goalkeeper was beaten in extra-time mainly due to a proper game plan by JCT. He expected Harvinder to pass to Jaswant to complete the finishing touches but the former went in alone and found the net.
