Soumyadeep, Mythili supreme

Top seed Soumyadeep Roy of Petroleum Sports Control Board relied on his attacking game to tame his second seeded teammate Subhajit Saha and claim the men's crown in the National ranking (East) table tennis championships at the Khudiram Anushilan Kendra in Calcutta on Thursday.

Third seed M S Mythili won the title in the women's section.

Barring a momentary lapse of concentration in the third game, Roy maintained a clear edge right through the 50-minute final to win 11-9, 13-11, 9-11, 11-9, 5-11, 11-5.

Third seed Mythili of PSCB did not have to sweat much while ending the giant-killing run of unheralded local girl Nandita Saha at 11-3, 11-7, 11-7, 11-9 and retaining her crown.

In the boys' final, top seed Arunava Ganguly (PSCB) overcame some anxious moments before beating unseeded Bengal lad Subhadip Das 11-6, 9-11, 6-11, 11-8, 11-6, 11-5.

Top seed Sushmita Roy of Bengal staged a brilliant comeback to edge out second seed compatriot Mousumi Paul with a pulsating 9-11, 7-11, 9-11, 11-2, 11-7, 11-9, 15-13 verdict and clinch the girls' title.
