India meet US in Davis Cup World Group playoff

India will meet the United States in the Davis Cup World Group playoff match from September 21 to 23.

The following are the pairings following Wednesday's draw.

Spain v Uzbekistan

United States v India

Argentina v Belarus

Britain v Ecuador

Belgium v Morocco

Italy v Croatia

Slovakia v Chile

Czech Republic v Romania

All the matches will be plaed between September 21 and 23.

The winners will secure places in the 2002 World Group, which features the best 16 nations, while the losers will compete in their zonal group one competitions next year.

PTI adds: Spearheaded by Leander Paes, India emerged as Asia Oceania Zone Group I winners after defeating Japan 3-2 in the second round, in Tokyo, last week.

A depleted US team sans Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi, suffered the ignominy of a first round exit from the World Group for the first time since 1993, when it lost 2-3 to Switzerland in February this year.

India last played the US in 1994 in New Delhi, and lost the tie 5-0. While the US team was led by Jim Courier, Todd Martin, Patrick McEnroe and Richie Reneberg, the Indian team comprised Leander Paes, Zeeshan Ali and Gaurav Natekar.
