CISF lift Beighton Cup

Central Industrial Security Force struck in the dying minutes to cap their overall domination and stun favourites Border Security Force 1-0 in the final of the 106th Beighton Cup hockey tournament, in Calcutta, on Monday.

Defender Irfan scored the all-important goal from a fine penalty-corner conversion to fashion CISF's triumph on their maiden entry into the final of the tournament, regarded as the blue riband of Indian hockey.

Irfan, CISF's penalty-corner specialist, sounded the board with a rasping hit following a Cyril Ekka push in the 68th minute of the fast-paced encounter at the Mohun Bagan ground.

CISF, comprising a number of local boys, played more cohesively, particularly in the second half, when they carried out incessant raids into the rival territory and gained as many as five penalty-corners.

On the other hand, BSF looked a pale shadow of their formidable self, failing to measure up to the creative game of their opponents. They secured two penalty-corners each on either side of the lemon break, but were done in by their incohesive midfield display.
