Richa Mishra makes a big splash

Promising swimmer Richa Mishra of Police continued her gold-grabbing act by picking up another gold as two national records fell by the wayside on the second day of the 55th National Aquatics championships in Calcutta on Monday.

The 16-year-old Richa, who had scooped as many as three gold medals on the opening day, continued her dream run by adding one more to her kitty with a record-breaking effort in the women's 400 metres individual medley, while the Railways team rewrote the national record in the men's 4x200 m freestyle relay at the Subhas Sarovar pool.

Richa maintained her lead right through to set a new national record with an impressive timing of 05.15:28 secs, eclipsing Sajini Shetty's previous record of 05.19:71 secs, established in 1994.

The Railways relay team, comprising veteran Sebastian Xavier, Pankaj Das, K Suresh Kumar and Akbar Ali Mir, set a new national record in the men's 4x200 freestyle relay event, clocking 08.15:60 sec, thus erasing the previous record of 08.17:80 secs, held by the Police.

The strong Police contingent continued to rule the roost, bagging three of the seven gold medals at stake on the second day.

Railways picked up two golds while Kerala and Karnataka got one each.
