Bhupathi-Knowles lose in second round

Eighth seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles lost their second round match to the wild card team of Leyton Hewitt and Patrick Rafter 6-3, 4-6, 3-6 in the Hamburg Masters series tennis tournament.

In the first set it was Mahesh and Knowles all over, as they forced two service breaks to wrap it up 6-3.

In the second set too, Mahesh and Knowles were well-placed at 4-4, but a break of serve turned things around and Hewitt/Rafter took the next two games to tie up the score at one set apiece.

In the decider, games went with serve till 3-4, when both Knowles and Bhupathi dropped serve in succession to lose the match.

The match statistics show that it was very close with 88 points won by Hewitt/Rafter to 87 by Mahesh/Knowles. 68 to 69 in first serve percentage, 60 to 63 in second serves. Hewitt/rafter won a few extra points off the second serves, and had five aces to one by Mahesh/Knowles.

Earlier Mahesh and Knowles had a relatively easy straight sets win of 7-5, 6-4 over Karsten Braasch and Dirk Dier, in the first round match.
