Gurwinder qualifies for Sydney Olympics

Gurwinder Singh of Punjab Police has qualified for the Sydney Olympics later this year, vice president of the Wrestling Federation of India Kartar Singh said in Chandigarh

Kartar Singh, a Padma Shree awardee, said Gurwinder will represent India in the 63kg weight category in the Greco-Roman event.

Gurwinder qualified at the Seoul qualifying round when he defeated the Kirghistan and Iranian wrestlers. He then went into the final round and defeated the Syrian wrestler to win the event.

The Faridkot-born Gurwinder Singh started wrestling under the supervision of Jagdev Singh and later joined Punjab Police.

Kartar Singh said that it is a great honour for the Punjab Police outfit that Gurwinder is the lone Indian qualifier for this event in the Olympics.

Singh, who is also president of the Punjab Wrestling Association, said that wrestling academies are being established in the state at different places, in which all modern facilities will be provided.
