Bombay set Rajasthan 393 to win

Hosts Bombay 'castled' themselves against any reversals, setting Rajasthan a daunting 393 for victory in their Ranji Trophy Super League encounter at the Wankhede Stadium, Bombay.

With a 107-run first innings cushion, Bombay declared their second innings at 285 for five and at stumps on Monday, the penultimate day of the four-day encounter, the visitors were 26 for one.

In the morning, Bombay finally brought to an end the last-wicket resistance after the addition of just five runs to the overnight 224 for nine.

The hosts then rattled up quick runs in their second essay through half centuries from captain Sameer Dighe (64: 9x4), Jatin Paranjpe (53: 8x4), Amol Muzumdar (63 not out: 6x4) and debutant Sushant Manjrekar (61: 10x4, 1x6).

Bengal take 48-run first innings lead

CALCUTTA: Veteran Bengal left-arm spinner and skipper Utpal Chatterjee had the Karnataka batsmen dancing to his tune, scalping 6 for 102 as the hosts took a vital 48-run first innings lead against Karnataka on Monday, the penultimate day of the four-day Group A Ranji Trophy Super League encounter at the Eden Gardens.

Karnataka, replying to Bengal's first innings aggergate of 316, could do no better than 268 as Chatterjee took his Ranji Trophy tally to 286 with the rich haul. In their second essay, the hosts were 75 for one at stumps -- 123 runs ahead.

Earlier, resuming at the overnight score of 119 for three, Karnataka lost wickets at regular intervals and were all out six minutes before the tea break, the innings being extended by a defiant 54-run stand for the ninth wicket between Venkatesh Prasad (37) and Dodda Ganesh (31).

Uttar Pradesh crush Saurashtra by 235 runs

RAJKOT: Uttar Pradesh cemented their claims for a quarter-final berth, defeating Saurashtra by 235 runs on Monday, the penultimate day of the four-day Ranji Trophy Super league tie.

UP secured eight points to swell their tally to 19 from three matches and next play Tamil Nadu in the top-table clash commencing March 13.

Saurashtra, who resumed at the overnight score of 39 for 3, surrendered to the guiles of the veteran mediumpacer Ashish Winston Zaidi and were bowled out for 153.

For the hosts, just four batsmen -- Sitanshu Kotak (32), Hitesh Parsana (41), Mukund Parmar (15) and N. Rana (16) -- reached double figures as Zaidi scalped six for 42 in 16 overs.

Laxman shines with bat and ball

A superb all-round display by Test discard V.V.S. Laxman helped Hyderabad take the upperhand against Railways on Monday, the penultimate day of their Ranji trophy Super League tie in New Delhi.

Riding on Laxman's efforts, Hyderabad set Railways a stiff victory target of 331 and at draw of stumps, the hosts had already lost a wicket with just 8 runs on the board.

Laxman, who had struck a fine century in the Hyderabad first innings, took three wickets as Railways were bundled out for 229, 118-runs in deficit of Hyderabad's first innings aggregate of 347. The stylish right-hander than came back to score a fine 45 and then returned to scalp the wicket of Sanjay Bangar before close, putting Railways on the defensive.

Punjab have Bihar on the mat

A brilliant century by seasoned campaigner Dinesh Mongia (179: 25x4) and a three-wicket burst by mediumpacer Gagandeep Singh (3 for 47) put hosts Punjab in total command of their Ranji Trophy Super League encounter against Bihar at the PCA stadium, Mohali.

At draw of stumps on Monday, an innings defeat loomed large over Bihar, who were four down for 94, still needing 165 runs to make Punjab bat a second time.

Mongia, 67 overnight, went on to compile his seventh Ranji ton (37th match), adding 190 runs in a fifth wicket association with skipper Vikram Rathore (158: 18x4, 1x6) as Punjab (269 for four overnight), declared their first innings at 503 for nine-- 259 runs ahead.

Tamil Nadu set Orissa 442 for victory

Tamil Nadu looked on course for their third successive win in as many matches, setting hosts Orissa 442 for victory in the Group C Ranji Trophy Super League tie at the Barabati Stadium, Cuttack.

At draw of stumps on Monday, the third day of the four day match, the hosts were a wicket down with 36 runs on the board and have an uphill task ahead of them.

Earlier, the visitors -- 132 ahead on first innings -- piled on some quick runs before declaring their second innings at 309 for 8, 50 minutes into the final session of the day.
