Anand enters quarter-finals

Super Grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand registered the all-important victory over Poland's Bartlomiej Macieja in the second game of his fourth round match in the World Chess Championship in Delhi on Thursday to book a berth in the quarter-finals.

Anand, who fully exploited the advantage of playing with white pieces, opted for the Caro Kann opening.

On the 25th move, Anand sacrificed a piece for attack and thereafter there was smooth sailing for the title aspirant Indian.

The game ended in mere 35 moves.

Macieja, billed as the giant killer in chess circles, on Wednesday gave some tense moments to Anand before forcing a draw on the 26th move in the first game of the fourth rond match.
