Fireworks to light Sydney harbour

Sydney's world-famous harbour will be the site of a spectacular fireworks display as part of the Closing Ceremony of the Summer Olympics, officials said on Friday.

"In a display designed to top anything seen before, Sydney will farewell the world in a truly international manner," said Bob Leece, deputy director of the Olympic Coordination Authority.

The display on October 1 will feature fireworks show put on by five groups from different continents to represent the five Olympic rings.

Each of the rings represent a continental grouping: Africa, Asia, the America's, Europe and Oceania.

The fireworks specialists will fire three-minute displays from different locations around Sydney's harbour.

The Olympic Stadium and the harbour will be linked by a series of what organises call "flash pyrotechnics" set off at 500 metre (yard) intervals along the 14-km (nine-mile) route from the stadium, where the Closing Ceremony will take place, to the harbour.
