Paraguay holds Argentina

Producing a superb exhibition of controlled defence with captain Carlos Gamarra being outstanding, Paraguay caused group leaders Argentina to drop its first home point with a 1-1 draw in an Olympic qualifer for the South American zone.

Paraguay in fact took the lead with a goal by midfielder Roberto Acuna, and only a 67th minute goal by Pablo Aimar got Argentina on level terms.

Thereafter, the Argentines threw all it had at the Paraguayan goal, but desperate defence saw the latter hold out for the draw.

Despite dropping its first home point, Argentina stay on top in the group, with 16 points from seven games. Paraguay meanwhile remain in 5th place, behind Brazil and Uruguay on goal difference.
