Kaveri Thakur swims English Channel

Kaveri Thakur of Maharashtra is the youngest swimmer to cross the English Channel this year.

Weathering unfavourable, chilly waters, the 16-year-old Thane-based marathon swimmer took 14.06 hours to touch the French coast of Calais after starting from Dover in Britain at 0410 hrs (local time) on August 6.

Kaveri's feat assumes significance considering the fact that the ice-cold water of the 18-km stretch had deterred several European swimmers to take the plunge this season.

On July 19, Kaveri set an Asian record by becoming the fastest female swimmer to cross the Strait of Gibraltar.
