Abhinav Bindra to be felicitated for world record-equalling effort

Air rifle shooter Abhinav Bindra, who will be the youngest marksman at the Sydney Olympic Games, will be given a cash award of Rs one lakh by the National Rifle Association of India for equalling the junior World record.

The 17-year-old Bindra, who achieved 596/600 at the Munich World Cup last month but missed the medal by a whisker, will be given the award at a felicitation function in Delhi on Friday.

The Chandigarh-based shooter had won the bronze medal at the Asian Shooting Championships in Langkawai, Malaysia, in January with a score of 592.

The gold and silver medallists got the direct quota place for the September 15 to October 1 Games, and the Indian had to wait for International Shooting Sports Federation to issue wild cards.

Along with Bindra, trap shooter Anwar Sultan will represent India at the Sydney Games.

Bindra, coached by Hungarian Laszlo Szucsak, is set to join the national camp in Bangalore on August 15.

The rifleman, who is currently at home, will undergo two trials from August 20 to 28 before leaving for Sydney on September 3.
