India win Davis Cup tie 4-1

India won the Davis Cup Asia-Oceania group tie against South Korea 4-1 at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association courts today and advanced into the world group play-offs.

The Indians, who took a 2-1 lead after the doubles match yesterday, sealed the tie in the first reverse singles itself when Leander Paes defeated Hyung Taik Lee 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(7-3), 6-4.

But there was no let-up for the Koreans even in the dead last rubber of the tie as Syed Fazaluddin downed Sueng-Hoon Lee 6-0, 6-7(2-7), 6-2.

The win has boosted India's hopes of reaching the 2001 Davis Cup World Group as doubles specialist Mahesh Bhupathi is expected to rejoin the team after a long injury layoff.
