Border to replace Marsh

Former Australian cricket captain Allan Border was today confirmed as the World champions' interim coach for next month's tour of Zimbabwe.

Border takes over from Geoff Marsh, who announced his retirement from the coaching role at the end of the current tour of Sri Lanka.

Australian Cricket Board chief executive Malcolm Speed said Border's appointment would provide stability while the search continued for a permanent replacement.

''Allan has worked with (captain) Steve Waugh and the team previously when filling in for Geoff,'' Speed said. He has been coach of Australia A and the Australian under-19 teams, making him well suited to this interim role.''

Queensland coach John Buchanan has been tipped as the leading candidate to fill the job on a permanent basis but an appointment is believed to be some weeks away.
