Abhin goes down tamely in final

India No. 2 Abhin Shyam Gupta went down in straight games to top seed Rio Suryana of Australia in the final of the Australian Olympic test event in Sydney.

According to reports reaching the Badminton Association of India, Rio whipped the Indian 15-6, 15-6.

Rio, who had a close semi-final against Bertrand Gallet of France, played more aggressively and smashed and dribbled well at the net.

In the second game, Rio, the world No. 24, aided by some good smashing, raced to a 10-0 lead before Abhin changed tactics and engaged his opponent in long rallies. The move paid off as the Indian narrowed the gap to 6-10. However, a few silly mistakes enabled Rio to wrap up the game and match 15-6, 15-6.

Abhin, who had a fine run in the tournament, looked sluggish right through the match though credit must be given to Rio who was definitely superior.

The Indian now moves on to Wellington to play in the New Zealand international.
