Vijay Kumar wins Cosmo Hindu golf

Amidst searing heat, the final round clash between Lucknow's Vijay Kumar and Calcutta's Feroz Ali ended without a whimper as the former, despite a round of one-under par 71, won the Rs seven lakh Cosmo Hindu Open Golf championship with a four round gross of 274.

Feroz Ali, who was four strokes behind Vijay Kumar yesterday, returned with one over par 73 to finish joint second along with Amritinder Singh of Delhi, who returned the day's best score of five under par 67. Both Feroz and Amritinder finished six strokes behind the leader with a total of 280. Reigning champion Gaurav Ghei finished fourth with a score of 281.

In the amateurs' section, local lad C V Yudhvir won the title with a four-round nett of 304.

The title triumph should do a world of good for Vijay, who began the new season in style. Last year's 'Order of Merit' winner, started with two parred holes before dropping a stroke in the par three third hole, much to the amusement of one and all. But he displayed nerves of steel and fired birdies in the fourth, sixth and seventh holes before dropping a stroke in the ninth.

On his return journey, he had a birdie on the 12th only to mess up things by dropping a stroke in the 13th. However, he steadied himself when it mattered most and parred the final hole to take home the winner's purse of Rs 1,09,998.
