Lanka pick young blood for Zimbabwe tour

Sri Lanka has included several youngsters in its 16-member squad to tour Zimbabwe next month and omitted former captain Arjuna Ranatunga, cricket board officials said today.

Prasanna Jayawardena has been picked as an extra wicket-keeper, while the selectors also awarded caps to Chamara Silva, Indika De Saram and Indika Gallage.

Sanath Jayasuriya retains the captaincy, while Mahela Jayawardene has been named his deputy.

Ranatunga failed to impress in the Test matches against Australia in September and was also dropped from the triangular series in Sharjah earlier this month.

The six-week tour of Zimbabwe includes three Tests and five one-day internationals beginning on November 18.

The Sri Lanka squad:
Sanath Jayasuriya (captain), Mahela Jayawardene, Aravinda De Silva, Muttiah Muralitharan, Marvan Attapattu, Chaminda Vaas, Romesh Kaluwitharana, Russel Arnold, Pramodya Wickramasinghe, Nuwan Zoysa, Chamara Silva, Indika De Saram, Suresh Perera, Indika Gallage, Rangana Herath and Prasanna Jayawardena.
