Pakistan cricket boss sacked

Pakistan cricket supremo Mujeebur Rehman, who is in hiding since the military coup earlier this month, was yesterday sacked by Pakistan President Mohammad Rafiq Tarrar.

According to reports, Zafar Altaf, who managed the Pakistan team during the World Cup England, in June, has replaced Rehman and been asked to appoint a new ad hoc committee which will run Pakistan cricket.

Rehman was appointed by ousted premier prime minister Nawaz Sharif's government amid an uproar from cricket fans over allegations that Pakistan's World Cup final against Australia was fixed.

"I have had a long association with the boys. They know me and I know them,'' said Altaf, who denied allegations of match-fixing and bribery at the World Cup.

"They fought really hard during the World Cup as they always do. They always give their best and will fight against the Australians,'' he said.

He said he had not seen the findings of the match-fixing report prepared by a judicial commission headed by Lahore High Court Judge Malik Mohammad Qayyum.

The judge reportedly recommended a ban on Salim Malik and Mushtaq Ahmed, and also fines on capitain Wasim Akram, Ijaz Ahmed, Inzamam-ul Haq and Saeed Anwar.
