Lillees, Campbell crush Pakistan

Australia's greatest fast bowler Dennis Lillee and his son Adam took three wickets each today to hand Pakistan a seven-wicket mauling in the opening match of their tour of Australia.

Lillee senior, making his last competitive appearance at the age of 50, grabbed an unlikely three for eight for an Australian Cricket Board Chairman's eleven.

Lillee junior, 25, a second grade player for a local Perth team, took two wickets in his first 12 deliveries and finished with three for 29.

Pakistan were dismissed for 168.

Then a whirlwind 103 from opener Ryan Campbell took the hosts to 171 for three in reply.

''It was nice to get a couple of wickets and bowl reasonably well,'' said Lillee senior, who took 355 wickets in 70 Tests for his country.

''I was very proud of the young lad of course. He bowled beautifully, particularly coming from only playing seconds and thirds. It's a big jump up playing against a touring side.''

Campbell, struck on the body by the first ball from Pakistani paceman Shoaib Akhtar, took 28 off a Mushtaq Ahmed over, including three sixes hooked over mid-wicket, to reach his 100 off just 57 balls. Despite the Lillee heroics, he was named man of the match.

The Australian public have been eagerly waiting to examine Akhtar's bowling and the player himself has promised to break the 100 mph barrier.

But Lillee said he did not think the young Pakistani was as fast as his own 1970s accomplice Jeff Thomson, even though Thomson never reached that speed.

''You don't see many blokes actually break stumps when you hit them, that's pretty quick.

''But he's certainly not up there with Thommo at the moment, he's certainly not in that pace bracket.''
