Uncertainty over Asia Cup hockey

Uncertainty hangs again over the conduct of the Asia Cup hockey tournament in Lahore next month in the wake of the sensitive political situation in Pakistan.

The Asian Hockey Federation (AHF), which is monitoring the situation, has sought the opinion of the nine participating countries whether the venue should be shifted.

Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) secretary K Jyothikumaran said a final decision will be taken by October 21, and also hinted that Malaysia could be the likely venue if the tournament is not postponed.

Earlier on, because of the Kargil conflict, the IHF had requested the AHF to shift the venue from Lahore. However, it later relented and agreed to play in Pakistan subject to the clearance of the team by the Indian government.

Meanwhile, a five-member Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) delegation will take part in the 75th anniversary celebrations of the FIH at Alexandria, from October 24 to 29.

IHF president K P S Gill, in the FIH council, Jyothikumaran, in the development and coaching committee, former Olympian Munir Sait, in the competitions comittee, former captain Pargat Singh, in the athletics panel as rules adviser, and S Thyagarajan, deputy sports editor of The Hindu, in the media committee, will represent India.
