Boycott's appeal hearing put off to May

A French court has put off an appeal hearing into a three-month suspended jail sentence against England cricket legend Geoffrey Boycott until May next year.

Boycott, 58, who played 108 Tests and captained England four times, is appealing against the sentence and a 50,000-franc ($A13,780) fine for assaulting former girlfriend Margaret Moore during a stay in a luxury hotel on the French Riviera in October 1996.

The Aix-en-Provence appeal court ruled that the evidence would be reviewed at a hearing on May 3, 2000. The legal case began in January, 1997.

Boycott, who had also been ordered to pay a symbolic one franc in damages, argued at the original hearings in Grasse in 1998 that he was framed by Moore because the couple were in the process of separating.

Moore allegedly suffered bruises and cuts to the face and fingers in the incident.

Boycott, who strongly maintains his innocence, lost a number of media contracts in the furore over the court case.
