Karthikeyan finishes sixth

Narain Karthikeyan finished in sixth place today at the famous Silverstone GP circuit from a qualifying position of 8th - despite being fifth quickest in the second of the two qualifying sessions.

England's Jenson Button was the star of the race, winning from fellow countryman Matt Davies, whilst the real battle for the championship was fought out between Stewart Racing's Luciano Burti and Manor Motorsport's driver, Mark Hynes, who came home third and fourth respectively.

Only two points separated them at the start - but Burti was excluded from the results after the race for an infringement of the racing rules on the track against Hynes.

So Jackie Stewart's Ford-backed Team now face a mountain to climb if they are to win the Championship overall at the last race next week at Thruxton.

Whilst sixth place in the race was a poor reward for Karthikeyan, who has won two races this year in dominant style, he will move into his second full season of Formula 3 as one of the favourites to win the Championship.

With backing from some of India's premier companies - Kingfisher, Mobil 1, TATA and JK Tyres - Karthikeyan will enter the year 2000 series as the man to beat. Quite an accomplishment for a young man who is paving the way for future Indian Grand Prix drivers.
