Windies beat Bangladesh by 73 runs

The West Indians, powered by a fine knock from Shivnarine Chanderpaul, beat hosts Bangladesh by 73 runs in the first of two one-day limited over matches in Dhaka yesterday.

Jimmy Adams scored 56 and took three wickets to be named man-of-the-match.

Batting first, the West Indies were in early trouble, losing two wickets for 29 runs before Chanderpaul pulled the innings around to put the tourists one-up.

Chanderpaul was unbeaten on 92 when the West Indies innings ended at 292 for six.

Ricardo Powell gave the 50,000 holiday crowd at the Bangabandhu National Stadium an outstanding batting display with some spectacular sixes to score 34 off 23 balls.

Wevell Hinds chipped in with 40 and Nixon McLean 39.

Bangladesh could have kept the West Indies score lower had all catching opportunities been taken. Naimur Rahman in particular drew the wrath of the crowd dropping two before later leaving the field with a bleeding finger.

Bangladesh, with the start of their innings delayed for 45 minutes by rain, were in trouble at five for 96 before Al-Shahriar and Khaled Masud gave the innings some respectability to finish at 219 for five.

Al-Shahriar was not out 62 and Masud unbeaten on a career-best 53.
