Sri Lanka asks ICC to waive legal costs

Sri Lanka's cricket board wants the International Cricket Council (ICC) to waive a demand for legal costs incurred after it challenged the regulatory body's code of conduct in Australia earlier this year.

The board received a formal request from the ICC to pay the substantial legal costs that were incurred after it challenged the ICC's code of conduct regulation to defend former captain Arjuna Ranatunga.

Ranatunga was hauled up by the ICC after he argued with umpires and led his team from the pitch after spinner Muttiah Muralitharan was called for throwing in an one-day game against England in Australia.

The ICC had to call in legal advice, the cost of which it is asking Sri Lanka to pay.

''We have written to the ICC explaining our position to justify the stand we took at that time,'' Rienzie Wijetilleke, the chairman of the interim cricket board, told a news conference.

''Circumstances compelled us to take that action and we want them (ICC) to accept that,'' he added.
