India bow to Japan in Asia Cup tennis

Defending champions India were shocked by third seeds Japan 0-2 in the third edition of the Asia Cup Tennis tournament in Delhi today.

India, title winners the last two years, caved in rather tamely as Syed Fazaluddin and Prahlad Srinath lost their encounters to Satoshi Iwabuchi and Terachi Takahiro respectively.

Fazaluddin lost 7-6(7-5), 6-7(9-11), 1-6, while Srinath was ousted 3-6, 1-6.

India No.1 Leander Paes did not play because of an injury.

''My body was paining when I woke up in the morning. I had pain in my knees, back and shoulder. I decided that it was in the interest of the country and I don't play today,'' Paes said.

Japan will take on formidable Uzbekistan, who earlier today beat Thailand 2-1, in the final tomorrow.
