Bookie arrested in Mumbai

Mumbai police today claimed to have unearthed a racket involving betting on cricket matches, and have arrested a bookie in this connection.

Officials of the anti-extortion cell raided the residence of Girish Haridas Shah and seized two imported telephone sets, a colour television set and Rs 45,000 in cash. Shah is said to have been running a betting racket from premises at Malad in the western suburbs of Mumbai.

The police reportedly caught Shah red-handed accepting bets on two different telephones. The bookie has been detained for interrogations.

This is not the first time -- such raids have netted bookies in the past, but so far, nothing much has come of these arrests.
