Mumbai, Karnataka win easily

Jatin Paranjpe scored an unbeaten 68 as Mumbai registered a seven-wicket victory over arch rivals Maharashtra in the West Zone Ranji one-day cricket match at the Wankhede Stadium in Bombay on Sunday.

Set to score 183 in 50 overs, Mumbai reached the target in 43.3 overs, losing just three wickets in the process.

Mumbai captain Amol Mazumdar (41) and India discard Vinod Kambli (28 not out) were the other Mumbai batsmen to shine.

Old warhorse Shantanu Sugvekar was the lone Maharashtra batsman to resist the Mumbai bowlers as Maharashtra, put in to bat, reached 182 off their 50 overs. Sugvekar's 70 runs came in 103 balls and was studded with five boundaries.

Brief scores: Maharashtra 182 (Shantanu Sugwekar 70, I Kamtekar 37; Nilesh Kulkarni 3/25, S Saxena 3/37). Mumbai 186 for 3 in 46.3 overs (Jatin Paranjpe 68 not out, Amol Mazumdar 41, Vinod Kambli 28 not out).

Easy for Karnataka

Bangalore: Ranji champions Karnataka, powered by an unbeaten 80 from Mithun Beerala, registered an impressive eight-wicket victory over Goa in the South Zone one-day match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

After bundling out the visitors for a moderate 153, Karnataka, aided by a first wicket century partnership, got to the victory target with over 15 overs to spare.

Karnataka had the visitors dancing to their tunes as their bowlers restricted them to a moderate 153 after Goa skipper Prashant Kakode chose to bat after calling right at the toss.

P J Rodrigues and S Kamat were the only batsmen to offer some resistance. Rodrigues's brief resistance was came to an end when Akhil had him caught by Ramesh on 32. Kamat was out for 25, caught by Naidu off Yalvigi.

Devanand shines for TN

Madras: Medium-pacer D K Devanand claimed four wickets for 14 runs as Tamil Nadu notched up a seven-wicket victory over Kerala with 20.1 overs to spare in their South Zone one-day match. After bowling out Kerala for 112 in 43.3 overs, Tamil Nadu reached the victory target in 29.5 overs for the loss of three wickets, at the M A Chidambaram Stadium.
