Gaurav Ghei in ninth place of Volvo China Open

Dame Luck smiled on Thammanoon Sriroj of Thailand, as a wild shot on the tee helped him shoot to the lead position on the opening day of the $ 4,00,000 Volvo China Open at Siliport Golf Club at Shanghai.
The Thai, who was six under at one stage, lost his concentration in the closing holes of the day to finish at five on par with the Scott Rowe of Hong Kong and Taimur Hussain of Pakistan.

Hot on their heels were clustered Kyi Hla Han, Christian Pena (US), Danny Zarate (Phillipines), Simon Yates(Scotland) and Kenny Druce (Australia).

But the man who warmed the cockles of Indian golf enthusiasts was Gaurav Ghei, who had a super round of three under to share the ninth spot. Compatriots Jyoti Randhawa at two-under 70 was joint 15th while Amandeep Johl (71) was joint 29th.

Ghei relaxed at the 19th hole, looking forward to repeating the his superb showing towards the end of the day, and move closer to the lead position.

In other golfing news that Indians may relish, countrywoman Amish Jaitha was the runner-up in the recently concluded Pan West Malaysian Amateur Open Golf Championshiup played at the Royal Perak Golf Club, Malaysia from May 13 to 16

In the international team match played concurrently with the first two rounds of the championship, India, represented by Amit Luthra and Sheeraz Kalra, finished eighth. The team event was won by Malaysia.
