Hockey player loses both legs in train accident

Vaishali Shinde, a promising state-level hockey and cricket player from Aurangabad, lost both her legs in a train accident at the Lasur Railway station, about 45 km from Aurangabad.

According to Vaishali's family, she and her younger brother were travelling by train from Jalna to Lasur to visit their sister, Dr Rekha Arun Patil, on Sunday. When the train slowed down after arriving at Lasur station, Vaishali reached for the door of the bogie to get down. Suddenly, some one pushed her, and she fell on the rails. One of her leg was severed on the spot. She was admitted to the Aurangabad government medical college hospital, where doctors were forced to amputate her other leg to save her life.

Vaishali, who is the daughter of Baburao D Shinde, a PSI in the Special Reserve Police Force (SRPF) Jalna, is a final year BA student of the Dankuwar Women's College at Jalna. She had excelled in cricket and hockey and won gold and silver medals at inter-university tournaments. Her dream was to become a hockey coach.
