Srinath, Fazaluddin to clash in Masters final

Top-seeded Prahlad Srinath and third-seeded Syed Fazaluddin will clash in the final of the MTNL Satellite Masters tennis tournament.

In the semi-finals in New Delhi today, both had to fight hard before making the grade. Fazaluddin struggled past second seed Artem Derepasko of Russia, winning 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, while Srinath got the better of fourth-seeded Harsh Mankad Mankad 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.

Srinath and Fazaluddin had met in the final of the third leg of the ITF circuit in Delhi. The former won that contest to avenge the defeat he suffered in the second leg at Mumbai leg.

Fazaluddin, who had lost to Derepasko in the final of the Mumbai leg, started well today, winning the first set in just 30 minutes. He served and returned well, and broke the Russian in the seventh and the ninth games.

But Derepasko, who commited 12 double faults throughout the match, managed to win the second set 6-4, breaking Fazal in the third game.

However, he was unable to carry that form into the decider, where Fazal fired on all cylinders. Fazal, who served 12 aces during the match, broke Derepasko in the fourth game to take the set and match in one hour 55 minutes.
