Sachin is new Indian captain

Sachin Tendulkar, who captained India between August 1996 and January 1998, will lead his country in the three-nation limited overs series in Sri Lanka next month.

He replaces Mohammed Azharuddin who is doubtful for the series, also involving Australia and Sri Lanka, following a shoulder injury.

No other name was discussed. It [the decision] was unanimous," chief selector Ajit Wadekar said on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Wadekar said Tendulkar would remain captain until the tour of India by the New Zealand team starting at the end of September.

He will also lead the side in two one-day tournaments in Singapore and Kenya.

Azharuddin, who replaced Tendulkar as captain, underwent surgery on his right shoulder in London last month. He has told the selectors he would inform them of his fitness early next month.
