Tendulkar likely to accept captaincy

Sachin Tendulkar is likely to replace Mohammad Azharuddin as captain of the Indian cricket team for the forthcoming tour of Sri Lanka, a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) official said.

Tendulkar had recently been quoted as saying that he did not want the mantle of captaincy. However, the BCCI official said the master batsman was misquoted and he (Sachin) did not decline to accept the captaincy.

Tendulkar was not available for comment on this issue.

The official also disclosed that Mohammad Azharuddin, who underwent rotator-cuff surgery, is still not in prime fitness.

Meanwhile, Ajit Wadekar chairman of the national selection committee, was non-committal on the issue.

"I do not discuss such issues before a selection committee meeting, he said.

''We (selectors) will meet in Nagpur on July 28 and decide who will lead India for the forthcoming tour of Sri Lanka."

Speaking from Baroda, BCCI honorary secretary Jaywant Lele said the board is still to take a decision whether to insist on a fitness certificate from Azharuddin or put him (Azhar) through a fitness test.
