Anand held by Karpov at Dortmund

While tournament leader and main rival Peter Leko increased his lead with a fine win over Jan Timman and Vladimir Kramnik produced an uncharacteristically aggressive display to down Vasselin Topalov, Vishwanathan Anand only managed a draw against FIDE world champion and world number 10 Anatoly Karpov.

Anand, who had beaten Karpov 5-1 in Leon and drawn 2-2 in the rapid games at Frankfurt in the Giants category tournament preceeding this ongoing Category 19 affair at Dortmund, had black pieces and was forced to go with Karpov's draw-oriented style of play.

The result didn't come as much of a surprise -- Elizbar Ubilava, who was earlier Karpov's second before moving into Anand's camp, indicated that when Karpov sits down with white against Anand, a draw is the most likely result.

Kramnik, meanwhile, ended a run of three successive draws with a 28-move win over Timman, playing black in the closed version of Sicilian Defence. Timman went for a variation as early as the third move, and made matters worse for himself by putting his queen on the firing line in the 26th move.
