Patil to coach Kenya till next World Cup

Former India Test cricketer Sandeep Patil is to coach the Kenyan cricket team for the next four years.

Patil, who was approached by the Kenya Cricket Association during the recent World Cup in England, confirmed his availability yesterday evening. He signed a contract with the Kenya Cricket Association, to help prepare the team for the next World Cup in 2003, in South Africa.

''It is a challenge," Patil declared. "The Kenyans are not short on talent; I'm sure I can help them prosper soon.''

Patil, however, did not disclose the monetary part of the contract. He only said he is being paid good money.

This assignment will keep him away from India for nine months of the year. Which means he will have to kiss his coaching and administrative activities goodbye. He is the head coach at the MIG Cricket Academy in Bandra, Bombay, and is also a managing committee member of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA).

Patil disclosed that he had already resigned from the MCA post. He said he felt sad that he would not be coaching at the cricket academy.

Alvin Kallicharan, the former West Indian batting great who was Kenya's coach during the World Cup, will now be in charge of cricket development in Kenya.
