Whatmore likely to return as Sri Lanka's coach

Dave Whatmore is expected to take over as Sri Lanka's cricket team coach by August 1.

The Sri Lankan-born former Australian Test cricketer shot into prominence after the Sri Lankan cricket team, coached by him, lifted the 1996 World Cup. However, shortly afterwards he was forced to quit.

Whatmore was asked by the interim committee of the Sri Lankan Cricket Board to take over as coach of the national team following its disastrous showing in the recent World Cup in England.

Whatmore was relieved by English county Lancashire after its executive meeting, held yesterday, board officials said.

He is expected in Colombo to take over his three-year assignment by this month-end before Sri Lanka's home Test series against Australia and also one-day triangular series from August 21-31 involving Australia, Sri Lanka and India.
