Bangladesh shops for new coach

Reports emanating from Dhaka indicate that the Bangladesh cricket board is looking to either South Africa or Australia for a new cricket coach, following the controversial exit of West Indian master batsman Gordon Greenidge.

BCB president Hossain Chowdhury, who is also a deputy minister in Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's council of ministers, said that board officials had contacted the respective boards of RSA and Australia, and were awaiting responses.

The new coach, as and when appointed, will have the twin tasks of coaching the national team, and also helping to develop cricket at the grassroots level in the country.

Greenidge, it will be recalled, was sacked in a sudden move last month, on the morning of Bangladesh's league fixture against Pakistan. Famously, Bangladesh then went on to upset the Pakistan applecart in that match.

The former West Indian opener had coached the national team to their 1997 ICC trophy victory in Malaysia, ensuring their participation in the 1999 World Cup.
