Sahara Cup called off

The Sahara Cup cricket tournament, scheduled to be held in Toronto later this year, has been called off in view of the prevailing situation on the Kargil front.

A statement issued by the Sahara India Pariwar, in New Delhi, said it accepted the view of its director and former India cricket captain Kapil Dev, that the series cannot be held at a time when ''our jawans are braving the most difficult odds to push back infiltrators".

The statement, issued by managing worker and chairman Subrata Roy, said: "We do understand and appreciate that any sporting event is symbolic of peace, fraternity and brotherhood between participating nations, and will closely observe the situation as it develops. If circumstances were to change appreciably in the future years, we shall definitely relook the same."

He said the Pariwar had been closely monitoring the developments on the Kargil front.

"We are pained, enraged, disgusted and highly sensitive to the developments at Kargil. Sahara India Pariwar can never be associated with anything that is against the interests of our country in any manner, in anything."
