New Zealand 226 all out

Adam Parore hit a defiant 73 to save New Zealand from total disaster as they were dismissed for 226 on the opening day of the first Test against England at Edgbaston on Thursday.

New Zealand, who won the toss, were in trouble right from the start after Roger Twose was dismissed by Alan Mullally in the opening over.

But it was fellow paceman, the New Zealand-born Andrew Caddick, who did much of the early damage, taking three wickets as the visitors were reduced to 104 for six.

However, Parore and Dion Nash doggedly added 85 for the seventh wicket to give the score some respectability. It took the introduction of recalled left-arm spinner Phil Tufnell to end their defiance, and he weighed in with three wickets to keep the advantage with England.

Parore, badly missed by Alec Stewart in the slips when he had made only seven, was the last man out, caught behind off Mullally, the second catch of the innings for debutant Chris Read, at 20 the youngest wicketkeeper to play for England.
