Waugh to take advice only from Warne

Australia's new cricket captain Steve Waugh has ruled out a committee-style leadership when he takes the team to the West Indies this month.

Waugh, who has replaced Mark Taylor, believes too much help from his team-mates could result in confusion. He will take advice from deputy Shane Warne, but not others.

"The advice thing is something you've got to watch,'' Waugh said today. "When I first became captain of the one-day side I hadn't had a lot of experience in captaincy and I thought I could give everyone a free rein on the field and take advice from a lot of players.

"In the end you get confused and don't back your natural instincts and that's something I've learnt.''

Waugh admits there is a perception that his captaincy will be a hybrid of the two men he has played under -- the cautious Allan Border and attacking Mark Taylor.

"In my first game as captain of New South Wales, I opened the bowling with an off-spinner (Gavin Robertson) so that was a bit different... I've always had a few ideas on the game.

"I've had the luxury of not being captain so I've looked at other captains and what they've done over time and thought of little things that I might try and change when I get the job."

Australia's 15-man Test squad leaves Sydney for the Caribbean via London tomorrow.
