Indian hockey team to be beefed up for rest of Pepsi series

Forward Brojen Singh and Medio Nausher Singh will brought in to reinforce the Indian team for the five remaining hockey Test matches in the Pakistan leg of the Pepsi Friendship Series.

Indian Hockey Federation secretary K Jyothikumaran said the decision to pick the two players who were in the development team that played in the five-nation tournament in Cairo was taken after a meeting attended by IHF President and chairman of the selection committee K P S Gill, coach Vasudevan Bhaskaran and himself.

He said the Indian squad, now increased to 18, would reach Lahore on February 15. The first Test in the Pakistan leg (the fifth in the series) would begin at Lahore on February 16. Gill returned from Cairo today.

Jyothikumaran said with the six-nation tournament in Dubai being called off, more probables would be picked up on the basis of the games at the Senior National Championship to be held in Hyderabad next month.

The IHF proposed to hold periodical long duration camps, beginning in June, to keep the players in shape, It also wants to prepare them through other international tournaments in the run-up to the 2000 Olympic Games.
