Sinclair scores historic double ton

Mathew Sinclair scored a historic double century to put New Zealand in command by the end of the second day of the second cricket Test against the West Indies in Wellington yesterday.

The 24-year-old's 214 - the equal second highest Test score on debut - enabled New Zealand declare its first innings at 518 for 9 wickets half an hour before stumps.

The West Indies faced five overs and at stumps were five for the loss of one wicket, with Sherwin Campbell (0) falling leg before wicket to Chris Cairns in the first over.

Sinclair was well-supported by Nathan Astle, who was run out for 93, in a stand of 189. The pair played with sound temperament to see their side to a huge total.

The Kiwis then lost five wickets in the last session for 45 runs, with Chris Cairns and Craig McMillan adding 51 for the sixth wicket before both were out for 31.

Reon King was the most successful West Indies bowler with figured of 4 for 96 off 36 overs. Franklyn Rose took 3 for 113 off 32.

Courtney Walsh, who began the Test needing nine wickets to break India's Kapil Dev's world record, could manage only 0/112 off 41 overs.
