Paes wins Challenger

India's Leander Paes edged past Cowan Barry of Great Britain 7-6 (10-8), 6-4 to win the Bikaji Rajasthan Golden Jubilee ATP Tour Challenger tennis championship at the Jai Club courts in Jaipur today.

This is the fourth Challenger title for Paes and the second of the year. He received a purse of US $3,600 for his victory and earned 60 invaluable ATP points.

Paes, who took 93 minutes to dispose off Cown, had to struggle before winning the first set via the tie-breaker in 59 minutes. After making a shaky start, losing his serve in the very first game, he broke his rival in the fourth game and somehow managed to win the set in the tie-breaker.

Paes, who is now ranked 166, displayed a better performance in the second set, which he won after breaking Cown in the seventh game.

Second seeds Anzari Tomas (Cze)/Iwabuchi Satoshi (Jpn) defeated Karlovic Ivo (Cro)/Schukin Yuri (Rus) by 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) to win the doubles title. The winners were richer by $1,550, while the losing pair earned US $900.
